Kickstarted last year, Battle Axe has finally rumbled on to the Switch, bringing the power of a modern Gauntlet game with it, going with glorious pixels instead of streaky polys. An arcade top-down hack and slash created by veteran artist Henk Nieborg, Battle Axe sees your homeland of Mercia held in the tyrannical grip of Etheldred, a sorceress in her impenetrable tower.
Answering the call to take her down, an elf, a wizard and a marauder bring their weapons to bear for some great-looking multiplayer old-school action. With music from Manami Matsumae, Battle Axe looks like a retro delight and is seeing some great reviews. The modern dynamics add some strategy and thought to the brutal combat, while your score is based on your speed through the level. So, do you go for glory, or be a bit more methodical?
