In the early days of 3D accelerators, there were plenty of fun arcade games trying to mimic the style of Daytona and similar arcade spectacles. Then came the quest for realism and most of the fun was lost.
Enter Hotshot Racing (formerly Racing Apex) which seeks to bring back the speed of Virtua Racing and the crazier cartoon poly racers of the day, with 60fps racing, plenty of modes and characters to make it more personal for Switch players.
Developed by Lucky Mountain, the decade of development is nearing an end thanks to help from Sumo Digital, with Curve Digital acting as publisher. It offers multiple single-player and multiplayer game modes - both online and offline including 4-player local split-screen co-op.
There’s the traditional Grand Prix mode where challengers race on multiple tracks in multi-round championship, Time Trial mode where players complete laps as they wish to seek out the fastest lap time for the online leaderboards, Cops and Robbers mode where the criminals need to evade capture to secure a big cash bonus whereas the police need to take them down, and the Drive or Explode where players need to race to checkpoints to avoid exploding.
